Notes Cox remarks that the liveliness of Brydone's description of manners and scenery, being couched in an easy and elegant style, rendered the work extremely popular. (Cox). Patrick Brydone was a Scottish traveler who, after attending St. Andrews University, went abroad as a travelling tutor and companion to William Beckford and some other gentlemen. On his return to England from his first tour in the Mediterranean, he published an account of his travels in Sicily and Malta.
