Notes This rare book is a compilation of the first chapters and opening verses from the four Gospels, divided into statios as follows: Statio I – Matthew 1:1, the book detailing the genealogy of Christ; Responses, Collect (1r-3v ff.) Statio II – Mark 1:1, the beginning of the gospel of Christ, John the Baptist’s preparation for the coming of Christ; Responses, Collect (4r-5r ff.) Statio III – Luke 1:5-25, Gabriel promises Zacharias that Elizabeth shall bear a son, whom they shall name John; Responses and Versicles (5v-8r ff.) Statio IV – John 1:1-14, “In the Beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God”; Responses and Versicles (8r-11v ff.) The provenance points to Jesuit use, the last leaf containing the acronym and Jesuit motto “OAMDG”, (“Omnia Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam”, All for the Greater Glory of God). Emphasis is on the openings of the Gospels, and as a whole, almost acting as a prelude.
