Notes Ludolph learned oriental and the basics of Ethiopic from Bochard. His interest in Abyssinia led him to try to form a political alliance between that remote country and the powers of Europe. He traveled to England in 1683 to promote his scheme. In the end the Abyssinians themselves defeated his purpose. “Still a valuable work, and of especial interest for its account of Ethiopic literature. The English translation Lowndes characterizes as ‘a work full of recondite and important information on the origin of the Abyssinians, the climate, soil, production, etc.”
