Notes Patrick Browne (1720–1790) was an Irish physician and botanist. He studied medicine, natural history at Reims, Paris and Leyden, however he focused primarily on botany. Along with his botanical work, he served as a doctor at St. Thomas\'s Hospital in London. After visiting the West Indies, he eventually settled in Jamaica in 1746, working as a physician. His life was also distinguished by a correspondence with renowned botanist Carl Linnaeus. Upon the latter’s death, fragments of Browne’s papers were found among his work. The Civil and Natural History of Jamaica (first published in 1756) was Browne’s magnum opus, containing new classifications for 104 genera.
