Louis-Marie Lante, born in 1789, was a painter and illustrator. He remains known today for his elegant and refined depictions of women’s attire. George-Jaques Gatine (1773-1824) was a prominent French engraver, who worked primarily with Lante throughout his career. Both Lante and Gatine are considered to be important costume artists of the early 19th-century.
