Notes This edition of Laus Veneris was designed, produced, and published by Christopher Sandford at the Golden Cockerel Press. This edition is limited to 750 copies, of which our example is no. 514. Algernon Charles Swinburne (5 April 1837 – 10 April 1909) was an English poet, playwright, novelist, and critic. He invented the roundel form, wrote several novels, and contributed to the famous Eleventh Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in every year from 1903 to 1907 and again in 1909. The Golden Cockerel Press was a major English private press operating between 1920 and 1961.The press was famous for beautiful handmade limited editions of classic works produced to the very highest of standards. The type was hand-set and the books were printed on handmade paper, and sometimes on vellum. A major feature of Golden Cockerel books was the original illustrations, usually wood engravings. The press was credited with having made a significant contribution to the revival of the British tradition of wood engraving, and is one of the most outstanding private presses of the 20th century.
