Notes The exiled Italian theologian, priest, and later professor Camillo Mapei, who was born in Nocciano, Italy, and died in Ireland in 1853, was an important figure of Italian Protestantism during the period of the Risorgimento. Exiled from Italy, he first came to England via Malta, Algiers, Marseilles, and later moved to Glasgow. Other well-known works of Mapei are: “Essay on the Political, Religious and Moral State of Italy”, translated by David D. Scott, Glasgow, 1847. Many of his writings are mostly in the journal “Eco Savonarola”. He is also known for his songs, hymns, lyrics, music and poetry. The views included in his book, “Italy …“are from among Britain’s most eminent contemporary artists, who visited Italy – Brockedon, Eastlake, Chantrey, Stanfield, Roberts, Harding, Prout, Leitch and Barnard –, as well as a list of impressive engravers “whose works are recognized as being of the highest excellence”. The essay in this book was written by Dr. Mapei in Italian, and translated into English by David Dundas Scott.
