Rare French wall map of Kuwait and surrounding area in the Persian Golf.
Important pre independent (In June 1961, Kuwait became independent) large chart of Kuwait, its harbour, the surrounding area and the early petroleum industry in Kuwait.
It is situated in the northern edge of Eastern Arabia at the tip of the Persian Gulf, it borders Iraq to the north and Saudi Arabia to the south.
Oil was first discovered in Kuwait in 1938, but the major discoveries came throughout the 1950s, during which time this map was printed and updated.
Kuwait City is still depicted as a small group of buildings gathered near the coast. An airport is depicted outside the city.
The Shatt al-Arab river formed by the joining of the Tigris and Euphrates as they enter the Persian Gulf.
The Shatt al-Arab, also known as Arvand Rud in Iran, is a river of around 200 km in length formed by the confluence of the Euphrates and the Tigris in the town of al-Qurnah in the Basra Governorate of southern Iraq. The southern end of the river constitutes the border between Iraq and Iran down to the mouth of the river as it discharges into the Persian Gulf. |
